Chicago Fire v New England Revolution: Acosta says composure key for misfiring hosts

Kellyn Acosta says the Chicago Fire need to be more precise with their ball progression if they are to end their barren run and begin to climb the MLS standings.

Frank Klopas team sit 12th in the Eastern Conference and have failed to win – or even find the net – in three matches ahead of Saturday s clash with the New England Revolution.

Chicago scored nine goals in their first five MLS matches in 2024 but have since netted two in their last five, and midfielder Acosta says composure is the key to improving their attacking output.

It s a combination of moving the ball back to front and finding our forwards, Acosta said.

I feel like we ve got to get them the ball in dangerous areas where they are bringing out their qualities, and I think we have not…

Ross County 1-2 Celtic: Kuhn late show keeps Rodgers´ side perfect

Nicolas Kuhn s late winner helped Celtic maintain their perfect start to the Scottish Premiership season with a narrow 2-1 victory over Ross County.

Brendan Rodgers side, who lost 7-1 to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League in midweek, struck twice in the final quarter of an hour at the Global Energy Stadium, where Ronan Hale s first-half penalty had given the hosts the lead.

Hale drilled home from 12 yards at the second attempt after his initial spot-kick was denied by Kasper Schmeichel, who was penalised for creeping off his line.

It was the first league goal Celtic had conceded this season, but the Hoops turned things around late on.

They equalised in the 76th minute when Callum McGregor s goalbound strike was turned in from close range by Alistai…

Blatter backs January 2022 World Cup

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has thrown his support behind the 2022 World Cup in Qatar being staged in January rather than June-July.

Summer temperatures in Qatar can soar above 40 degrees while the winter months can be almost half that.

Blatter, speaking in Doha ahead of the opening match of the Asian Cup, said: I expect it will be held in the winter.

We have time to look at this question, it is still 11 years away but we must decide the most adequate period for a successful World Cup which means January or the end of the year.

Blatter said that the Qatari Football Association is now responsible for organising the World Cup and they would work closely with FIFA in the years ahead to guarantee a successful tournament.

Redknapp backs Scholes for Euro 2012

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp would take Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes to Euro 2012 if he was England manager.

Redknapp is the favourite to replace Fabio Capello, following the Italian s resignation last week, and stated if he was the Three Lions boss he would pick the veteran playmaker for the tournament in Poland and Ukraine.

Let s be honest, you would love to have Paul Scholes in the Euros this year, he said. He d be in your team, he s that good.

Whoever s there would love to take him, I m sure. You d love him to play. He plays like the Spaniards, like Xavi (Hernandez) or (Andres) Iniesta. He does not give the ball away.

Despite their advancing years, Redknapp also stated Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard should definitely be in the Eng…

´It´s never a red card´ – Fernandes angered by sending off

Bruno Fernandes accepted that he made things harder for Manchester United with his sending-off in the 3-0 defeat to Tottenham, but insisted it was never a red card .

Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke scored the goals as the visitors cruised to a win at Old Trafford on Sunday.

But the turning point for the hosts was Fernandes dismissal in the 42nd minute, as he slipped into a tackle on James Maddison, catching him high on the shin.

It is the first time in 242 appearances for United in all competitions that Fernandes has been shown a red card, while he became the fourth Red Devils captain to receive his marching orders at home in the Premier League.

Mancini delighted by depth after Italy equal record in Euro 2020 win

Italy head coach Roberto Mancini was delighted his side maintained a high level of performance, despite making eight changes to the starting XI in the 1-0 win over Wales at Euro 2020.

The Azzurri qualified for the last 16 with a perfect record of three wins from three matches in Group A, scoring seven goals without conceding against Turkey, Switzerland and Wales.

Atalanta midfielder Matteo Pessina, who was a late addition to Italy s European Championship squad after a groin injury to Stefano Sensi, netted the winner against Wales on Sunday, showcasing the squad s depth.

Mancini made eight changes to the starting line-up for their final group game, after back-to-back 3-0 victories, insisting he needed to inject fresh strength ahead of the knockout phase.

Rio 2016: Neymar, Gabriel Jesus fire Brazil into final

Neymar and Gabriel Jesus inspired Brazil as they beat Honduras 6-0 to reach the final of the Rio 2016 men s football tournament, with Rogerio Micale s men now just one win away from the country s first-ever gold medal in the sport.

The hosts endured a difficult start to the tournament as they were held to goalless draws by South Africa and Iraq, but have been firing on all cylinders ever since seeing off Denmark and Colombia and they were once more in impressive form on Wednesday.

Neymar needed only 15 seconds to give Brazil the lead with the fastest goal in Olympic history, pouncing on an error from Johnny Palacios before beating goalkeeper Luis Lopez thanks to a touch of fortune.

The Barcelona attacker landed awkwardly after his goal and there were fears…

Turks break Swiss hearts in Euro 2008

Arda Turan ended Switzerland s interest in Euro 2008 in heartbreaking fashion as a last-minute breakaway goal gave Turkey a 2-1 win here on Wednesday.

Just as it seemed the co-hosts had done enough to stay alive in the competition, the midfielder broke clear on the left, cut inside and beat goalkeeper Diego Benaglio from the edge of the area with the help of a cruel deflection off the boot of centreback Patrick Muller.

It was harsh on the Swiss but they had only themselves to blame having squandered the chances to kill off the Turks long before the dramatic denouement.

Hakan Yakin, one of three players in the Swiss side with family roots in Turkey, had given Jakob Kuhn s side a first-half lead in treacherous conditions.

But the veteran playmaker also…

12-12-2009 Sunderland vs Portsmouth

Sunderland Portsmouth is an interesting match up with Portsmouth looking much better under new boss Avram Grant and Sunderland hoping to maintain their impressive home form and steer away from lacklustre performances the fans have seen on the road.
